# How to play surround sound?

Playing surround sound largely depends on the hardware and software you have.

This page only deals with virtual surround technology. If you have a physical surround system, refer to its manual or your operating system manual for instructions to configure it.

If you are using the PipeWire media server, you may be able to use SOFA technology to enable spatial audio and virtual surround without complex configuration.

Refer to the manual for your Linux distribution for additional instructions.

If you have a Mac from 2018 or later running macOS 10.15 Catalina or later, your computer can leverage Dolby Atmos technology to virtualize surround sound without any extra configuration.

If you are running Windows 10 or later, you can follow Microsoft's instructions to enable spatial audio. Dolby Atmos and other alternatives are also available for a fee through the Microsoft Store.

Google Pixel: If you have a Pixel 6 or later (excluding A series), a Pixel Fold or a Pixel Tablet, you need to turn on Spatial audio in the Sound settings. On Pixel phones, you also need headphones for spatial audio to function.
Samsung Galaxy: If you see a Dolby Atmos option in the sound settings, your Samsung Galaxy device can leverage Dolby Atmos technology to virtualize surround sound without any extra configuration.
Android devices marked with a Dolby Atmos logo: Your Android device can leverage Dolby Atmos technology to virtualize surround sound without any extra configuration.
Other Android devices: Refer to the manual from your manufacturer for information related to spatial audio.

If you have an iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 14.6 or later, your phone or tablet can leverage Dolby Atmos technology to virtualize surround sound without any extra configuration.
